panchamirtham - divine sweetness
a fruitful temple offering tradition which can also be prepared as a snack!
Panchamirtham is a type of ‘prasadam’ or sweetmeat served as a sweet offering to Lord Murugan in several South Indian Hindu temples, especially during notable religious festivals such as Thapusam. typically, the Panchamirtham is distributed to devotees after being offered to the deity.
the name ‘Panchamirtham’ also translates from Sanskrit to mean ‘5 elixirs’, relating to the standard ingredients used which is banana, ghee, jaggery, cardamom and honey. with this being super easy to prepare, you could even make this as a casual snack or as dessert!
Panchamirtham (பஞ்சாமிர்தம்)
serves 4
3-4 ripe saba bananas (cavendish bananas are good too)
1 tbsp ghee, melted
1 tbsp jaggery sugar / red sugar
2 tbsp honey
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
6 dates, pitted and sliced
1 red apple, cubed
3 tbsp raisins
8 cashews
directions
combine bananas, ghee, sugar, salt and cardamom in a bowl. using your hand, mash the bananas until fine, ensuring all the ingredients and combined well
add in the other ingredients and mix well with your hand. cover the bowl and let the flavours marinade for at least 2 hours. serve and enjoy as a dessert or teatime snack use as prasadam.
